Out & About DMC for Botswana

The fascinating wealth of flora and fauna and the untouched nature are the country's greatest treasure. Botswana is the only country in the world where more than 40 percent of the country's land area is already protected. The three most beautiful reserves are certainly the famous Kalahari, the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park. This country offers you unforgettable experiences and pure wilderness. Botswana can be traveled all year round. Each season has its own charm in each region. The subtropical, continental semi-desert climate ensures that temperatures hardly drop below 20 degrees all year round. If you have problems with high humidity and high temperatures that do not cool down even at night, you should avoid the summer from December to March and travel more in winter, with more pleasant temperatures and dry weather.

Important travel information for Botswana:

Climate:
The seasons are opposite to those in Central Europe. Botswana is dominated by a hot and dry semi-desert climate in large parts of the country. In winter (May – September) it is sunny and warm during the day, at night the temperatures drop noticeably (depending on the region up to 0 °C). In the rainy season in summer (December – March) the humidity reaches values of up to 80%. It is hot during the day with 35°C and warm nights as well as short, heavy rain and thunderstorm showers in the afternoon.

Entry requirements:
To enter Botswana, you need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after departure. You do not need a visa unless you are traveling with a temporary passport. Please check with the embassy about entry requirements if you are travelling with minor children!

Currency:
Botswana accepts South African rand. You can also withdraw money with your credit card or debit card (look out for the "Maestro" sign) at any ATM. However, the amount of cash is often limited to the equivalent of about EUR 100-500 per card/day. Credit cards (preferably VISA and Mastercard) are widely accepted, especially in hotels and restaurants.

Languages:
English is considered the official language in Botswana, with the native language of the locals being SeTswana.

Electricity:
220/240 V, AC, three-pin connectors. Adapters are available in the country.

Phone:
The country has a well-functioning network. Mobile phones usually work without any problems, as long as it is approved for foreign use (roaming).

Time:
During the summer time in Mid-Europe, Botswana is at the same time as Central Europe (CEST), otherwise Botswana is one hour ahead.

Health care:
No vaccinations are mandatory. The Federal Foreign Office recommends vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis (polio) and hepatitis A. Malaria is a risk in northern Botswana in the districts of Chobe and Okavango. Please contact your doctor. When entering from a yellow fever infection area, a yellow fever vaccination is required.
